OpenAI has launched o3-Pro, its most advanced reasoning AI, available on ChatGPT Pro at $200 per month. It delivers deeper, more reliable answers for complex tasks in coding, science, and business. OpenAI also slashed o3 API prices by 80 percent to help smaller firms adopt advanced AI.
How OpenAI’s New Model Can Answer ‘Challenging Questions’

ChatGPT creator OpenAI has officially released o3-Pro, its most advanced AI reasoning model yet. Business leaders and others can now use the AI model within ChatGPT or to power software applications via an API. The company also announced a major pricing cut to its smaller but faster o3 model.
According to an OpenAI spokesperson, o3-pro is a version of o3 that has been “designed to think longer and provide the most reliable responses.” OpenAI’s o-line of AI models have reasoning capabilities, meaning they can use an internal monologue to simulate the act of thinking through the best method to answer a question or solve a problem in multiple steps. Reasoning has been found to greatly improve the performance and reliability of AI models.
In release notes, OpenAI says that users have favored pro-level reasoning models in “domains such as math, science, and coding.” Like most of OpenAI’s models, o3-pro has access to tools, which allow it to take agentic actions, such as searching the internet, analyzing external files, and executing code. OpenAI recommends using the model for “challenging questions where reliability matters more than speed, and waiting a few minutes is worth the tradeoff.”
It hasn’t totally been smooth sailing so far. On X, several users tested out o3-pro’s response time. One user posted a ChatGPT screenshot in which he sent the model a message saying “Hi, I’m Sam Altman.” According to the screenshot, o3-pro spent 3 minutes and 54 seconds thinking, and then answered “Hello, Sam Altman. How can I assist you today?”
However, another user who had early access to the model said it was “much less sycophantic than any other I’ve interacted with.”
O3-pro is now available on ChatGPT Pro, OpenAI’s $200 per month subscription service, and ChatGPT Team, the company’s platform for small to medium-sized businesses. Those on ChatGPT’s enterprise and education platforms will get access to the model next week. The model replaces o1-pro, the company’s most recent pro-level reasoning model, in ChatGPT’s model lineup. (If you’re confused at all by OpenAI’s slew of models, take a look at our guide.)
OpenAI claims that o3-pro exhibited significantly improved performance over o3 in evaluations regarding science, education, programming, business, and writing. While the model is crushing benchmarks, there are still some things o3-pro can’t do, such as generating images.
The company also announced that it had developed a new version of o3 that is 80 percent cheaper to use via API. Previously, developers paid $10 for every million input tokens processed by the model, and $40 for every million output tokens generated by the model. (Tokens are chunks of text used by AI models to understand data.) The new o3 costs just $2 per million input tokens and $8 per million output tokens. With a more affordable price point, smaller businesses can begin integrating o3’s reasoning capabilities into their own applications.
OpenAI is still set to release its next flagship model, GPT-5, sometime this summer. CEO Sam Altman has said that GPT-5 will unify the company’s language and reasoning models into a single product line.
Also this week, Altman published an essay on his blog in which he declared that humanity is “close to building digital superintelligence,” referring to AI so advanced that it can do anything a human can do, but better. He also wrote that 2026 “will likely see the arrival of systems that can figure out novel insights,” while 2027 may see “the arrival of robots that can do tasks in the real world.”
In the meantime, while you wait for superintelligence to arrive, you check out OpenAI’s latest innovations, provided you’re alright with paying $200 per month.
