MIT’s Dennis Whyte and a team of grad students found a fusion shortcut: ReBCO superconducting “tape” magnets that can make tokamaks dramatically smaller yet far stronger. That insight became ARC/SPARC and spun out Commonwealth Fusion Systems, racing to prove net-energy fusion and scale it into grid-ready power plants.
